— Where and when will this lecture happen?

This is a single 4-hour online class in English transmitted via Zoom on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 4:30 pm to 9 pm UTC (it includes a 25-minute tea break). *Check out what that time means in your location and time zone (you can use this time zone converter). As an example, 4:30 pm UTC (when the lecture starts),  means 9:30 am PDT (Western USA), 11:30 am CDT (Central USA), 12:30 pm EDT (Eastern USA), 5:30 pm BST (London).

The lecture will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube as a private video and will remain permanently available to all registrants.

— What is this lecture about?

Ananas nanus - colored pencils on toned paper

There will be discussions on several materials and their quality (papers, pencils, erasers, extra tools etc.), detailed explanations and demonstrations on techniques applied for achieving better results, focusing particularly on the procedures of layering and blending (dry mode blending, wihout solvents) to obtain a smooth and realistic finish, rich in nuances of value and color. We will also discuss the refinement of visual perception, detection and choice of color, and much more (detailed information on the content of this lecture is at the foot of this post).

— Is this lecture recommended only for beginners in colored pencils? How about experienced artists?

Not only. Both beginners and experienced artists can benefit a lot. Beginners will be introduced to a quite popular and effective technique, surely helpful and a great start for them in this medium. Experienced artists can also benefit, depending on their background and objectives, since my approach to these methods of layering and blending may present many differences from theirs when it comes to the ordering of colors applied, pencil motion, hand pressure etc.; hence our collective exchange of experiences can be complementary and helpful to everyone.

— Is this lecture different from other lectures on colored pencils you have taught in the past? What about the full courses you taught, like the introductory one and the advanced modules?

Yes, this is a somewhat different lecture. Nevertheless, in a detailed comparison, there will be many superpositions of teachings and demonstrations, as it provides a detailed explanation of the same fundamental method I have always used with colored pencils. However, since this lecture is particularly focused on the process of obtaining color density and value by layering and dry-blending, these will be the main subjects of my approach. I will also use different references from those I used before. As for those who attended my introductory and advanced classes, there probably will not be much novelty, except for some change and expansion in my techniques, and in the understanding of the material, which inevitably happens over the years and after further experience.

— Can I have a preview of the type of technique this class will present?

Yes, many time-lapse videos on my channel on YouTube provide examples of the procedures I employ. Although time-lapses play out very fastly, it is possible to reduce the speed of the videos using the settings gear, so one can better appreciate the process.

— What's the price?

USD 55,00 (Fifty-Five American Dollars) – via PayPal

— What if I miss the lecture, entirely or partially? What if my connection is unstable?

The entire session will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube as a private video. Access will be provided to all registrants, whether they are present at the live meeting or not. There is no deadline to watch the recorded video, since the registrants' access will remain permanently open. I am open to receiving questions at any time after the meeting from those who eventually miss or can not attend the live session.

— I cannot attend the live session. If I enroll for the recording only, is the price the same?

Yes, because all enrollees will have access to the same content and all receive the same attention from the tutor, since every student is welcome to ask as many questions as needed, at any time after the lecture occurs (there's no deadline for sending new questions). If necessary, students can even record a video with their questions, or else send them by email if this is enough. The instructor will answer all questions, and if the questions require demonstrations to be better clarified, an extra video can be recorded.

— Are there any prerequisites?

No, everyone can participate, regardless of previous experience with this technique.

— Do registrants need to have materials to participate?

Not necessarily, as the discussion will also involve the choice of material, providing essential tips for those who don't have any supplies and intend to purchase them.

— I have materials, can I follow the class hands-on?

Yes, feel free to work along with the demos and ask technical questions as they arise, but individual critique about the students' results can not be provided in these short workshops, only in the full courses that I frequently offer.

— What technological apparatus do I need?

You must have the Zoom application installed (on any device with internet access) to watch the live session. But if your intention is to watch the recording only, you can access it via the YouTube website.

— How can I enroll?

Please read through all the information above and below on this page. If no question remains and you decide to enroll, send me an email at the address below with the data requested further below, then I will reply and send you a payment request via PayPal. WARNING: I always reply within one day at maximum and always check my spam box, so if you do not receive any feedback from me, please resend the message or try reaching out to me via social media.

— The email message for registration must contain the following data:

1. Your full name

2. The country where you live

3. The email address you use to log in to YouTube (this is to provide you with access to the private video with the recording of the class)

4. Can you tell me how you came across this event?

As you receive my PayPal payment request and the process is completed, I will reply confirming your registration and sending your receipt.

Detailed information on this lecture's content

In this class, we will:

Examine the physical aspects of colored pencils in their dry modality (without solvents) and how to obtain the best result and refined finishing.

Understand the importance of choosing the best paper’s texture to suit our own individual style and why we should always maintain our pencils sharp.

Learn to work softly and gradually to capture the correct contrast and precise strength of light and shade, and also avoid damaging the paper or creating waxy, smudgy clusters.

Explore the use of the colorless blender pencil or stiff brushes, and understand the advantage of lighter colors overlapping darker ones.

Comprehend how, with colored pencils, the pigments are mixed on the paper (and not on a palette), hence the importance of planning which color comes first and which last in the layering sequence, and how different the final resultant color is, depending on the order of layering.

Perceive and represent colors by detecting first their general aspects regarding temperature, vibrance, and position in the color wheel.

Assess the convenience of using colored or toned papers and understand the part they play in the color building.
